Mongolia buses (Ulaanbatar city to other provinces)

Mongolia has a regional bus network system from Ulaanbaatar city to different provinces and cities. The national auto transport center is organizing a total of 1200 vehicles every day in 75 destinations.
Regional buses also public transportation in Mongolia and ticket price is very economical compared to the other options.
No internal flights operate in some provinces from Ulaanbaatar city. That’s way long-distance buses are the first option to transport to/from the capital city. On longer distances, Some Buses travel overnight.
There are also several Mongolia bus routes to bordering cities in China and Russia, including Ulan-Ude city in Russia, Elian, and Beijing city in China. Please read more about these bus routes on this page soon.

Ticket reservation and boarding

Mostly, there are one-way tickets, but you can book a round trip ticket, as you know your time framework. Depending on travel distance and provinces, prices are different. It would help if you saw the prices on the exact bus routes. There is always a fixed price for the tickets.

How to buy tickets

All the buses require an advance seat reservation. You can make a reservation bus ticket online. Since Aug 2019, the Website has an English menu, but online payment is only available with internet banking.

It is recommended to make a reservation early for popular routes during the busy travel season. However, if the bus ticket is not sold out, it is usually possible to buy a ticket just before departure at the bus terminal.

Boarding 

Come to the bus terminal 30 min before departure and show up your ticket. 

Seating and Amenities

Provincial buses typically equipped with seats that arranged in rows of four-seat and two aisles. On some buses with four standard seats per row are in everyday use.

Buses come with no toilet but make regular toilet stops along the way. Smoking and drinking are generally not permitted on the buses.

Luggage size and limits

Long-distance buses come with a spacious luggage trunk for large suitcases and bags. There is usually a limit of 20 kg of luggage per passenger. Additional luggage has charged as 1000 MNT per kg. The luggage size should be smaller than the size of 60*40*20 cm. Smaller bags can be taken onto the bus where there are usually some overhead racks.

Provincial bus stations in Ulaanbaatar city

So you have to know which bus terminal that sells the ticket to your planned destination. There are three bus stations/terminals in Ulaanbaatar that operate buses to the Mongolian provinces.

Dragon center/bus terminal

A branch of the National Auto Transportation Center operates a public transportation service with over 700 vehicles in 50 destinations in 16 provinces and to Ulan-Ude, Russia.

Routes to provinces: Arkhangai, Uvurkhangai, Darkhan, Erdenet city, Uvs, Zavkhan, Khovd, Bayan-Ulgii, Bayankhongor, Gobi-Altai, Selenge, Khuvsgul provinces.

Bayanzurkh bus terminal

Bayanzurkh bus terminal has long-distance bus services to Dornod, Khentii, Sukhbaatar, Govisumber, Dornogovi provinces, and Zamyn-Ud town in Dornogovi as well as Erlian city in China.

Routes to provinces: Khentii, Dornod, Sukhbaatar, Dornogobi, expect Zamiin-Uud.

Lavai bus terminal

The Lavai Auto Center serves the three main destinations: soums and center cities of Tuv, Dundgovi, Umnugovi provinces. Zamiin-Uud of Dornogibi province.

    I would like to book a travel from Ulgii to Ulaanbaatar on 19th of November this year.
    Can you inform, when th e bus leaves Ulgii, when the bus arrives UB in which bus-terminal, the price and wher I get the ticket.

    The public buses leave for Ulgii at 10:00 and 13:00 every day from the Dragon bus station and the same schedule works for Ulgii to UB buses (from aimag transport station in Ulgii). You can go and buy tickets (with a return ticket) from the Dragon bus terminal. We will advise you to buy tickets a few days prior. The one-way ticket is 130,000 MNT per adult.

      the website you mentioned is still working. we always use it. But there is a site that recently added bus and train ticket bookings. Please check this http://www.tapatrip.com. We have not used it. but looks easier to use.

      The public buses leaves for Baruun-Urt at 8:00am every day from the Tenger bus station. The one-way ticket is 43,600 MNT per adult.

  3. Hello, we would like to take a bus from Ulaanbaatar to Murun or Hatgal and back in June, could you please share two bus schedules/price/arrival time?

      The intercity bus schedule is updated monthly. As we can see now, There are 4 departs from Ulaanbaatar to Murun every day. Departure times are 8:00, 15:00, 18:00, and 20:00.
      For Hatgal, there are no buses at the moment. But, we are sure there will be buses in June. Hope this helps.

      The intercity bus schedule is updated monthly. As we can see now, There are 3 departs from Murun to Ulaanbaatar every day. Departure times are 8:00, 15:00, and 20:00. We think that the same schedule works in September. Hope this helps.

  5. Hello, I’ve got a question.
    We would like to go to the city Chuluut Arkhangai. Do you know if there is a Bus connection existing from Ulan Bator to Chuluut. And for going back we would need a transport from Tariat Arkhangai back to Ulan Bator. Is there also a Bus connection?
    If not, could you please recommend another viable mean of transport?
    Also we found out that during our stay there will be the the Naadam celebration, are there any changes in the schedules do we have to be aware of that?

      At the moment there is no direct bus from Ulaanbaatar to Khatgal. There was a direct bus once a week last year. We hope there will be bus in summer time. Hope this helps.

    We want to take a bus this summer from Ulaan Bator to Ulgii. Is it possible to travel with our bicycles? If yes, do you know how much is for the bicycle? I see there is one bus that leaves at 10am and another at 13pm. Which want do you think is better?

    1. For the bicycles, we think you should talk to the bus driver and pay for it. Bus takes around 28 hours from Ulaanbaatar to Ulgii. So Just take the most convinient one for you. Hope this helps

  8. Hello! We’ll be in western Mongolia in early July and we wanted to know if there is any bus from Khovd to Ölgiy, specifically on July the 7th please.
    We didn’t find anything in tapatrip, just to Altai..
    Is there any other way to go from Khovd to Ölgiy?

      We are sure that there is local transportation service from Ulgii to Khovd. But we do not know the timetable and prices.
